Help tackle child poverty by supporting
the Save the Children Christmas bazaar and coffee morning on 27th
October between 10am and 1pm.
This is one of several events in the
fund raising calendar for the Wallingford and District branch of the charity
which raises on average some £6,000 a year to help build a better life for
children both in the U.K. and around the world. You can visit http://www.savethechildren.org.uk to find information about where the money is spent.
"In the UK, Save the Children today
operates a multi faceted programme to tackle child poverty,” says Celia
Collett.“We undertake campaigning, policy and advocacy work
alongside our two core programmes. These are:
“Eat, Sleep, Learn, Play! : a grant programme designed to support children and
families in the most desperate need. It directly provides them with household
essentials, such as a child’s bed, a cooker or educational books and toys. It
also includes a benefits check to help people access the money that may be
available to them through benefits, and volunteer support to help families
undertake simple DIY tasks to improve the home environment for children. The
programme helps us evidence the effects of severe poverty on children and
inform our calls for policy change.
“Families and Schools Together:We want to give children a permanent route out
of poverty too. Education is the key to breaking the vicious cycle that keeps
people poor – generation after generation. That’s why our award-winning
Families and Schools Together (FAST) programme helps children in some of the
most deprived areas the UK do well in the classroom. It builds
stronger relationships between parents, children, teachers and their
communities. Results prove that it makes a real difference. Teachers reported a
10% improvement in children's reading, writing and maths after completing the
FAST programme; there was a 52% reduction in poor child behaviour at home,
and a 40% reduction of poor behaviour at school. 90% of parents said they had
stronger relationships with their child.
“Save the Children works anywhere in the
world where we see injustice to inspire breakthroughs for children; we save
children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfill their
potential. The UK is no exception. We believe no child should
live in poverty or have their life chances ruined by deprivation"
